Urðaviti
To the south of Viðlagafjara is Urðaviti lighthouse, which once stood on Urðir on the eastern coast of Heimaey. The lighthouse was submerged under lava in the 1973 eruption but was later rebuilt on top of the new lava. The lighthouse has collapsed twice; the lighthouse that stands today was built in 1986. There is considerable erosion along the coast and therefore it has been built so that it can be moved inwards as the coastline becomes further eroded.
