Heimaklettur
Heimaklettur is one of the most popular hiking spots in Vestmannaeyjar. It’s the highest peak in the archipelago, standing 928 feet (283 meters) above sea level. There are steps up the most difficult slope, which certainly makes the route easier, but it’s still a challenging climb to the top. Inexperienced hikers and those unfamiliar with the area should hike with someone who knows the route well. Those who reach the top will not be disappointed. The views are spectacular, and on a clear day you can easily see all the way to the mainland.
Heimaklettur is a tuff promontory created by eruptions under the glacier late in the last Ice Age. It juts out from the sea at a steep angle, but its top is covered with grassy slopes on the pillow-lava peak where sheep graze. At the top of the mountain is a guest book and hikers are strongly encouraged to sign it upon arrival.
